Alejandro Cardona (San José, Costa Rica, August 26, 1959) is an internationally recognized composer, guitarist, and filmmaker known for his innovative work in contemporary music and artistic education. Born into a family of musicians and writers, Cardona was educated at Harvard University and European institutions, developing a unique style that blends elements of Latin American tradition with sound experimentation.

Over more than four decades, Cardona has stood out for his extensive musical output, ranging from works for orchestra and chamber music to sound installations and music for film, dance, and theater. He has participated in major contemporary music festivals in America and Europe, and his compositions have been performed by internationally renowned orchestras and ensembles. He is the author of books on harmony, creative processes, and musical analysis, and the founder of the Nuestra Cultura publishing house.
Cardona has received numerous awards, including the National Award “Aquileo J. Echeverría” in Music four times, the Ibero-American Rodolfo Halffter Composition Award, and a Latin Grammy for his work recorded by the National Symphony Orchestra of Costa Rica. His work has been distinguished for its ability to bridge genres and cultures, and for his commitment to Latin American artistic identity.

A professor and researcher for decades at the National University of Costa Rica, Cardona has decisively influenced generations of musicians and creators. Retired from academia since 2022, he is now fully dedicated to composition, performance, and musical production, maintaining a body of work that continues to inspire through its creativity, depth, and relentless search for new forms of expression.
