Violet Mary Firth (1890-1946), better known as «Dion Fortune», was one of the most famous British occultists and esoteric writers, as well as a pioneer of modern witchcraft. From a young age, she joined the Theosophical Society and attended psychology and psychoanalysis classes at the University of London. In 1919, she was initiated into the London temple of Alpha et Omega, before entering the Stella Matutina order, both heirs to the spirit and rituals of the legendary Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn.
Fortune, founder of her secret society Fraternity of the Inner Light, was greatly influenced by Aleister Crowley, whom she met and corresponded with, and his theories on sexual magic, as well as Arthurian myths. Among her non-fiction work, notable are The Cosmic Doctrine, The Mystical Qabalah, and Psychic Self-Defense. She died in 1946 from leukemia.
