Desde su primera edición en 1884, esta novela se convirtió en un clásico de la narrativa latinoamericana de todos los tiempos gracias a su difícil sencillez e intimismo, así como al ajustado retrato que se realiza en sus páginas de la primera generación de americanos que es totalmente consciente de su independencia de España.
