Un grupo terrorista toma como rehenes a unos turistas japoneses en un país extranjero. Después de una primera movilización de los medios de comunicación, pasa el tiempo y las negociaciones se vuelven más complicadas. La atención de la prensa internacional y de la opinión pública va decayendo y todo el mundo parece olvidar a los turistas secuestrados. Pasados los años, salen a la luz unas grabaciones de unas escuchas realizadas en la cabaña donde los terroristas habían recluido a sus víctimas. En ellas están recogidas las historias que cada uno de los rehenes escribió y, luego, leyó en voz alta a los demás: una idea que, en un primer momento, sirvió para combatir el tedio y el abatimiento, y que luego se convirtió en una manera para vencer el miedo a un futuro incierto explorando un pasado que llevaban en su interior y que nadie habría podido arrebatarles. Yoko Ogawa, la autora de la aclamada La fórmula preferida del profesor, en el marco de esta conmovedora historia, hace revivir a través de las voces de unos seres sobre los que se cierne la sombra de la muerte, una serie de relatos, unos recuerdos, que representan un legado de vida y esperanza.

Yōko Ogawa was born in Okayama, Japan, in 1962. She is a Japanese writer known for her delicate and disturbing style, which explores memory, loss, and the deepest human emotions. She studied Literature at Waseda University and since 1988 has published more than fifty works of fiction and non-fiction.
Her literary career began with "Disintegration of the Butterfly" (1988), and she gained international recognition with novels such as "The Housekeeper and the Professor", "The Memory Police", "Revenge", "The Diving Pool", "Hotel Iris", and "The Girl Who Went to School on a Hippopotamus". Her work has been translated into more than twenty languages and has been adapted for film and theater.
Throughout her career, she has received numerous awards, including the Akutagawa Prize, the Yomiuri Prize, the Tanizaki Prize, and the Shirley Jackson Award. In 2020, "The Memory Police" was a finalist for the International Booker Prize.
