Philip Kerr (1956–2018) was a Scottish writer known for his series of historical noir novels featuring detective Bernie Gunther. His literary debut was with March Violets (1989), followed by titles such as The Pale Criminal (1990), A German Requiem (1991), and The One From the Other (2006). Other notable works include Field Grey (2010), Prague Fatale (2011), and Metropolis (2019). Additionally, he wrote standalone novels such as A Philosophical Investigation (1992) and Dark Matter (2002), and the children's series Children of the Lamp under the pseudonym P. B. Kerr

Kerr received several literary awards, including the RBA International Prize for Crime Writing in 2009 for If the Dead Rise Not.
