His most famous creation is Zorro, a masked vigilante who first appeared in The Curse of Capistrano (1919), published in All-Story Weekly magazine. Due to its success, the story was compiled and published as a novel in 1924 under the title Zorro.

McCulley wrote numerous sequels to the character, consolidating his legacy in literature and cinema. In addition to the Zorro stories, he explored other genres, such as crime and adventure, writing for pulp magazines.
