He graduated in Modern Languages from Queens’ College, Cambridge, and worked as an English teacher before dedicating himself fully to writing. His literary debut came in 2002 with Altered Carbon, a novel that merges elements of noir with a dystopian and technological future. This book, which introduced the character Takeshi Kovacs, was an immediate success and won the Philip K. Dick Award. The work was adapted by Netflix into a series of the same name in 2018.
