Writer, archaeologist, and university professor, he is considered a world authority on Ancient History. He taught at the University of Manchester from 1974 to 1990, and at the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf from 1990 to 2002, in addition to being a visiting professor at the University of Newcastle. A specialist in Roman Britain, he has written several studies on that era. However, his most recognized works are the biographies of three of the greatest Roman emperors: Hadrian, Marcus Aurelius, and Septimius Severus, all published by Gredos.
