Synopsis "androcles and the lion"

Androcles and The Lion, by George Bernard Shaw - Akasha Classics, AkashaPublishing.Com - Overture; forest sounds, roaring of lions, Christian hymn faintly. A jungle path. A lion's roar, a melancholy suffering roar, comes from the jungle. It is repeated nearer. The lion limps from the jungle on three legs, holding up his right forepaw, in which a huge thorn sticks. He sits down and contemplates it. He licks it. He shakes it. He tries to extract it by scraping it along the ground, and hurts himself worse. He roars piteously. He licks it again. Tears drop from his eyes. He limps painfully off the path and lies down under the trees, exhausted with pain. Heaving a long sigh, like wind in a trombone, he goes to sleep.

George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950) was an influential Irish playwright, critic, and essayist, known for his sharp satire and witty style. He primarily wrote plays, excelling in social drama and comedies with critical content. His most famous work, Pygmalion (1913), inspired the renowned musical adaptation My Fair Lady. He also wrote Saint Joan (1923), Man and Superman (1903), and Widowers' Houses (1892), among many others.

Shaw received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1925 for his contribution to literature, especially for his influence on modern theater. His legacy continues thanks to his ability to combine humor, irony, and social criticism in his writings, establishing himself as one of the most significant figures in English-language theater.
