The twenty-second of July, one day after Yech'on. Companies come apart in the dark and reassemble by morning, the military police collect stragglers by the score and send them back untried, and on the last day of the month a first lieutenant named Gilbert refuses an order and hands over his pistol belt. He will be sentenced to be shot.On the sixth of August, a private first class of Company M stays at his gun to cover a withdrawal and is killed. The regimental journal records nothing of the action. The Medal of Honor follows.Then the mountain. The crest cannot be conceded, and neither army can hold it, so it is taken and lost and taken again up spurs one man wide.
