Synopsis "Beckmann. Drawings"

Around 80 works from all creative phases reveal the artist as an idiosyncratic interpreter of the world. Drawing was essential to Max Beckmann: Using pencil, chalk, pen, and pastel, he collected motifs, searched for new formal solutions and pictorial inventions, developed complex compositions, and shaped his worldview. In the cosmos of his drawings, we get to know Beckmann anew. Fascinating insights into Beckmann's world and current findings from the complete catalogue raisonné of his drawings: Rarely seen drawings and famous works from the Städel Museum's significant holdings and international collections invite you on a journey through Beckmann's life phases, revealing his highly independent artistic development from his early years in Berlin to his final years in exile. A loner who drew in all phases of his life and under all circumstances.
