Believe in yourself; believe in your team; believe in your dreams. It's the motto Lexi Montgomery has trained with her whole life, dreaming of playing professional soccer since she could dribble a ball. Now, at seventeen, she is living her dream. She's playing for the Under-20 U. S. Women's National Team. SportsCenter has touted her as the next Mia Hamm. And she's about to play in her first World Cup.Until she goes down with a season-ending ACL injury.Seven months of grueling physical therapy later, she's back on the pitch, trying to lead her high school teammates to their first-ever State Championship. Physically she's ready; mentally, not so much. She chokes in her first two returns and, mid-game, storms off the field without a proper substitution. Lexi doesn't know why she's hit a mental wall and is pretty sure she'll never get past it. But then she meets Brasil. A guy her dad would definitely not approve of. He's twenty. He's a high school dropout. To her dad's chagrin, he's also a freestyler-a guy who can perform tricks with a soccer ball better than a Harlem Globetrotter. But he can move the ball like no one she's ever met. He entices her into competing in freestyle competitions with him. He teaches her how to play soccer at a whole new level. Most importantly, he gets her to believe in herself again. But even if it's enough to get her back onto the pitch before her high school season ends forever, she may have to choose between Brasil and her team. Because his freestyle competition? It's the same day as State Championship.
