Jack Kerouac y Allen Ginsberg, los miembros más célebres del movimiento literario llamado Generación Beat, estuvieron unidos por una común sensibilidad artística así como por una profunda y duradera amistad que influyó en su vida y afectó enormemente a su literatura. Bill Morgan y David Stanford, responsables de la presente edición, arrojan nueva luz sobre esta decisiva relación al publicar esta impresionante colección de cartas, dos tercios de las cuales eran inéditas.Extraordinaria por su alcance, su calidad y su intimidad, la correspondencia empezó en 1944, poco después de que Kerouac y Ginsberg se conocieran, y prosiguió con pocas interrupciones hasta 1969, año del fallecimiento de Kerouac.Los dos hombres habían consagrado su vida a la literatura desde fecha muy temprana y sus cartas constituían un activo laboratorio en el que compartían y discutían sin cesar ideas en evolución constante. Se recomiendan libros, analizan autores y movimientos literarios, intercambian poemas, comentan críticamente los borradores de las nuevas obras y las respuestas que se dan contribuyen a determinar el siguiente paso.En estas cartas descubrimos también vehementes autorretratos y una vivida reconstrucción de la escena cultural creada por ambos. Se describen viajes épicos (como el de Kerouac en 1952 de Nogales a Ciudad de México en un autobús destartalado para ver a Burroughs y los iluminadores recorridos que efectuó Ginsberg por Yucatán y Chiapas en 1954); ciertos momentos representativos se describen de un modo conmovedor y a menudo humorístico; y se detallan investigaciones espirituales. Tanto si estaban de acuerdo como si seguían caminos intelectuales divergentes o se peleaban ('No sois más que una banda de insignificantes vanidades literarias', dirá Kerouac a Ginsberg en 1952), continuaban carteándose con gran temple y emoción. En estas cartas vemos ante todo y sobre todo a Ginsberg y Kerouac como a escritores poseídos por la pasión artística, la innovación y el genio. El inquebrantable apoyo y el incesante estímulo de Ginsberg fueron fundamentales para Kerouac, y las innovaciones de éste orientaron decisivamente la obra de aquél. Quizás una de las últimas grandes correspondencias a cuatro manos del siglo XX, revela no sólo los procesos creativos de dos maestros, sino también la andadura de una singular amistad, con gran fuerza emocional y profundidad espiritual. Vivida, absorbente y fascinante, es también el retrato incomparable de los dos escritores que encabezaron el movimiento cultural y artístico que definió a toda una generación.

Irwin Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) was one of the most emblematic figures of American alternative culture. The publication of the poem Howl (1956) was the trigger that consolidated beat poetry and gave it a concrete form. Soul of the Beat Generation, he gathered around him Jack Kerouac, Neal Cassady, and even the elusive William S. Burroughs, and fought tirelessly for the writing and publishing of his works. A prominent figure of the so-called "Flower Revolution" and the hippie movement of the sixties, he fought against war and racism, spread rock, chemical and mystical alteration of states of consciousness as a cultural element, and was always at the forefront of social and literary scenes, promoting libertarian ideas and notions of spirituality and authenticity, which always kept him in the crosshairs of the authorities. He traveled the world reciting his poems.
