La creencia en un gran juicio final en el que un ser superior, justo y riguroso, evalúa la conducta de los seres humanos para premiarlos o castigarlos según merezcan, es una de las ideas religiosas más extendidas entre los pueblos y culturas especialmente del área mediterránea. Desde el Egipto faraónico hasta el pueblo judío, pasando por el mazdeísmo o las religiones griega y romana, esta creencia llega al cristianismo que la expande por toda su zona de influencia a lo largo de su historia. En esta obra se repasan tanto los orígenes como el desarrollo de esta idea y se ofrece un panorama de cómo las sucesivas religiones y creencias le han ido otorgando sus propias señas de identidad hasta configurar todo un corpus imaginario. En este, el final consiste en el establecimiento del Reino de Dios en la Tierra, el merecido castigo de los impíos y la vida gozosa en el cielo de los virtuosos, pasando previamente por el fin de los días, la necesaria resurrección previa y el terrible Juicio. Antonio Piñero Sáenz (Chipiona, Spain, August 14, 1941) is a philologist, historian, and Spanish writer specialized in early Christianity, Judaism before Christianity, and the life of Jesus of Nazareth. He graduated in Pure Philosophy at the Complutense University of Madrid in 1968, in Classical Philology at the University of Salamanca in 1970, and in Trilingual Biblical Philology at the Pontifical University of Salamanca in 1976. In 1974, he obtained his PhD in Classical Philology at the Complutense University of Madrid. Since 1983, he has been a professor of New Testament Philology at the same university

Among his most notable works are "The New Testament: Introduction to the study of the first Christian writings" (1995), "Approach to the historical Jesus" (2018), and "The other Jesus: life of Jesus according to the apocryphal gospels" (1996). His work focuses on the philological and historical analysis of early Christian texts, seeking to separate the historical figure of Jesus from later theological interpretations. In addition to his academic output, Piñero has participated in dissemination activities through media and conferences, bringing his research on the origins of Christianity closer to the general public.
