En Entre mareas (1915) se reúnen dos de los más característicos relatos de la narrativa de Joseph Conrad (1857-1924): «El colono de Malata» y «Por culpa de unos dólares». En ambos se recrean vidas solitarias, nómadas y fracasadas; gentes que se sienten más a gusto a bordo de su barco que en tierra firme, gentes de pocas palabras y de difícil comunicación con el mundo. Los protagonistas de Conrad suelen ser humanísimos antihéroes que simbolizan, sin énfasis ninguno, toda la grandeza y la miseria de la condición humana. Conrad es capaz de tallar con unas pocas frases, como en caoba, un carácter, una vida, más allá de la concreta anécdota.
Relatos de ambiente marinero, colonial y un tanto cosmopolita, ambientados en el oriente asiático que en otro autor hubieran sido meros relatos de peripecia y aventura y que en Conrad adquieren una crepuscular densidad metafísica del todo inimitable.

Joseph Conrad (1857-1924) was a Polish-British writer known for his tales about the sea, colonialism, and the psychological struggles of individuals facing adversity. His work is characterized by the exploration of themes such as morality, despair, and the absurdity of human existence. Born in Ukraine, Conrad spent much of his life as a sailor before turning to writing, which significantly influenced his narrative style.

Among his most notable works are Heart of Darkness (1899), Lord Jim (1900), and Nostromo (1904). Although he did not receive major awards during his lifetime, his influence on 20th-century literature is undeniable, being considered a precursor of modern narrative.
