Synopsis "Entremeses (in Spanish)"

A number of the great classics of Spanish-language literature are brought together in this series of specially adapted titles for young adults. Each title contains text written in a literary but accessible style and a full-color documentary that provides information about the author, the work, and the time period. Much like modern sketch comedy and stand-up routines, the entremeses of 16th- and 17th-century Spanish theater—short farces performed between acts of longer dramatic works—poked fun at contemporary culture even as they made serious critiques of it. This collection gathers several pieces by Miguel de Cervantes, one of the primary proponents of the form, and includes a number of lexical and interpretive notes directed at nonexpert readers that help contribute to their enjoyment of the material.

Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra (Alcalá de Henares, September 29, 1547-Madrid, April 22, 1616) was a Spanish novelist, poet, playwright, and soldier. He is widely considered one of the foremost figures in Spanish literature. He was the author of The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha, a novel commonly known as Don Quixote, which made him world-famous and which many critics have described as the first modern novel, as well as one of the greatest works of world literature, whose number of editions and translations is only surpassed by the Bible. Cervantes has been dubbed the "Prince of Wits".
