"Hebrew Reborn" is a seminal exploration of the transformation of the Hebrew language from a sacred tongue used primarily for prayer and study into a vibrant, modern literary medium. Shalom Spiegel provides a comprehensive historical and critical analysis of the figures and movements that fueled this linguistic renaissance. The work traces the evolution of Hebrew through the Enlightenment (Haskalah) and the subsequent rise of national consciousness, highlighting how authors and poets breathed new life into ancient forms to express contemporary thoughts and feelings.Spiegel examines the contributions of pivotal literary figures, illustrating the profound cultural shift that allowed Hebrew to once again become a living language. This study is not merely a linguistic history but a deep dive into the soul of a people reclaiming their heritage through words. For scholars of Jewish history, literature, and linguistics, "Hebrew Reborn" remains an essential text that captures the passion and intellect behind one of the most remarkable cultural revivals in human history. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
