Synopsis "Hide Kawanishi"

Hide Kawanishi (1894 - 1965) was an important Japanese painter and woodblock artist in the sosaku hanga - creative prints - tradition.

Hide Kawanishi is known for woodblock prints with bold, intense colors, the deliberate absence of traditional black outlines typical of classical ukiyo-e, and a strong focus on scenes from his hometown of Kobe, an international port city that inspired nearly all of his subject matter.

Hide Kawanishi was born into a wealthy merchant family involved in trade and ship-owning. The family also operated a private post office, which Hide later took over.

When the private postal system was absorbed into the National Postal Service, he became a government-employed postal worker with a stable income, which allowed him to remain financially independent of the art market and unconcerned with commercial success.

Throughout his career, Hide Kawanishi produced a large number of single-sheet designs (more than 1,200), some included in printed albums and books as well as several major series.
