Lane Smith ha recibido cinco veces el premio al Mejor Libro Ilustrado del New York Times y dos veces la Mención de Honor Caldecott. En 2012, el Museo Eric Carle de Arte de Libros Ilustrados lo nombró Artista Carle por su «innovación a lo largo de su vida en el campo de los libros ilustrados infantiles», y en 2014 recibió el premio a la trayectoria de la Sociedad de Ilustradores.
