En la Checoslovaquia comunista, Ludvik Jahn, joven estudiante universitario y activo miembro del Partido, se permite un dia gastarle una broma a una companera de aula y le envia una postal en la que ironiza sobre el optimismo imperante. A los dirigentes universitarios, la broma no les hace la menor gracia y, tras un rapido proceso incriminatorio, Ludvik es expulsado de la universidad y del Partido. Con esa caida en desgracia se abre para Ludvik un nuevo periodo marcado por el amor, un amor tierno y desesperado hacia la sencilla Lucie, carnal y cinico hacia la apasionada Helena, en circunstancias personales e historicas que, precisamente por lo tragicas que son, se convierten, con el paso del tiempo y vistas con perspectiva, en situaciones ridiculas e incluso pateticas. Tal vez, todo cuanto ha vivido Ludvik no habra sido sino una mala pasada de la que, para colmo, no podra culpar al destino, sino a si mismo. / In Czechoslovakia, Ludvik Jahn, a university student and active party member plays a joke on a classmate and sends a postcard that satirizes the prevailing optimism. The joke is not funny for university leaders and Ludvik is expelled from university and the Party. What Ludvik has lived has not been a trick of life. He cannot blame the fate but himself.

Milan Kundera (/'mɪlan 'kundɛra/ Brno, April 1, 1929-Paris, July 11, 2023) was a Czech novelist, short story writer, playwright, essayist, and poet. Since 1975, he lived with his wife in France, where he acquired citizenship in 1987.

Kundera's most famous work is The Unbearable Lightness of Being. Before the Velvet Revolution of 1989, the communist regime in Czechoslovakia banned his books. He led a low-profile life and rarely spoke to the media. He was thought to be a candidate for the Nobel Prize in Literature and was also nominated for other awards.

He received the Jerusalem Prize in 1985, the Austrian State Prize for European Literature in 1987, and the Herder Prize in 2000. In 2021, he was awarded the Order of Merit by the president of Slovenia.
