Dante Alighieri was an Italian poet. His masterpiece, Divine Comedy, is one of the fundamental works of the transition from medieval to Renaissance thought. It is considered the masterpiece of Italian literature and one of the peaks of world literature. In Italian he is known as "the Supreme Poet". Dante is also called the "Father of the Italian language". He actively participated in the political struggles of his time, which led to his exile from his hometown. He was an active defender of Italian unity. He wrote several treatises in Latin on literature, politics, and philosophy.
