Love never fails. People fail to abide in it. The idea began at The Blue Nile, an Ethiopian restaurant in Houston, when Pastor Sydney Pennie Sr. tried to explain the Greek words for love to a curious young waitress who spoke three languages but was still learning English. With nothing else to write on, he pulled four sugar packets from the table holder and put a different word and its meaning on each one. She tucked them into her apron to teach her boyfriend. Those four packets grew into a workshop, a teaching series, and this book. Love Sugar is Pennie's name for agapē, the unconditional, sacrificial love that starts with God and is formed in the believer by the Holy Spirit. Drawing on nearly four decades of ministry and twenty-five years of pastoral leadership, he builds the book on what he calls the Tripod of Love: the Virtuous Vertical, our relationship with God; the Peaceful Perpendicular, a healthy biblical love of self; and the Harmonious Horizontal, our relationships with everyone else. Twelve chapters carry the reader from the sugar packets through the agapē U-turn, the bitterness that sours sweet things, the dynamics of courtship and marriage, the battle within, a wholly devoted heart, and the power of being slow to speak. Warm, pastoral, and grounded in Scripture and relatable stories, the book asks for heart transformation rather than behavior modification. It is written for married couples, singles, families, and church groups who want to prepare for love before it is tested, or repair it after it has been.
