Un libro de ensayos inéditos imprescindibles de filosofía vital . Este no es un libro de pensamiento, sino de comprensión. Porque en realidad es eso. Quienes quieran buscar en sus páginas dialéctica, demostración o controversia, se llevarán una desilusión. Cuando se escribieron las páginas que siguen, no me interesaba el pensamiento propiamente dicho, sino la comprensión. La cual es, como cualquiera puede constatar, absolutamente diferente del «pensamiento». Podemos pensar mucho y bien y, no obstante, no entender nada. La diferencia esencial entre la juventud y la vejez es que la primera practica el pensamiento mientras que a la otra le corresponde la comprensión. Una cosecha muy sorprendente y rica está esperando al investigador de esta oceanografía del alma contemporánea. Espoleados por no sé qué exagerado afán, todos nos arrojamos directamente a las honduras, a las zonas del fermento original y de las refutaciones para descifrar un poco mejor la vida psíquica. No es menester bajar tanto. Los grandes enigmas los encontramos en la superficie, a plena luz y plena simplicidad. Ese intento de examinar la vida cotidiana del alma, de resolver de nuevo seriamente los problemas sencillos (a los que nadie toma en consideración ya sea porque son demasiado grandes o demasiado sencillos) la llamo oceanografía.

Mircea Eliade (Bucharest 1907 – Chicago 1986) was a professor at the University of Bucharest, the École des Hautes Études in Paris, the Sorbonne University, and the University of Chicago, where he chaired the Department of History of Religions and taught for thirteen years

During a trip to Italy to finish his doctoral thesis on Renaissance Philosophy, Mircea Eliade came into contact with Hinduism and moved to India for four years to learn the Sanskrit language and Hindu culture and religion. Before settling in France, he spent five years in Lisbon, where he met Ortega y Gasset and came into contact with Spain and intellectuals of the time such as Menéndez Pidal and Eugeni D’Ors, whom he deeply admired

Over time, he became part of the Eranos Circle, a scientific and philosophical analysis organization whose goal was to explore the links between the thought of the East and the West

Mircea Eliade wrote more than 15 essays and three narrative works, and also engaged in journalism in Romania in the 1930s
