A principios del siglo XVIII, un marino escocés llamado Alexander Selkirk se enfrentó al capitán del navío donde trabajaba y el resultado fue que lo abandonaron en una pequeña isla desierta del archipiélago de Juan Fernández, a unos 700 kilómetros de las costas de lo que hoy es Chile. Contra todo pronóstico, Selkirk no sólo logró sobrevivir en el islote, sino que cuatro años más tarde fue rescatado y devuelto a la civilización. La historia de Selkirk se hizo muy popular en Inglaterra y varias publicaciones dieron cuenta de sus peripecias. Aprovechando la avidez por las historias de náufragos capaces de vencer la adversidad, e inspirándose en las vivencias de Selkirk, el periodista y escritor Daniel Defoe dio a conocer, en 1719, Aventuras de Robinson Crusoe. Robinson llega a una isla desierta, como consecuencia de un naufragio, a los 27 años de edad y permanece en ella durante los 28 años siguientes, desafiando la soledad y los peligros de la naturaleza y viviendo todo tipo de aventuras, entre ellas las visitas de indígenas 'salvajes'. El libro es la crónica del encuentro de un hombre consigo mismo y de la capacidad del individuo para sobreponerse a las circunstancias adversas y sobrevivir. A partir de 12 años. El relato de una epopeya, símbolo de la lucha del individuo contra la soledad, la de un hombre europeo que reafirma en su condición de náufrago sus valores económicos, morales y religiosos, así como la constatación de la falta de igualdad en las relaciones humanas. English writer and journalist, Daniel Defoe is mainly known for his novel Robinson Crusoe (1719), though he also stood out for his role in the development of the press and for his political and social essays

Defoe left his studies to become a discreet businessman, whose activities were not entirely profitable, even receiving prison time for his debts

From 1695, after several years of exile due to his political ideology, he starts a new business dedicated to tiles and bricks which begins to work, providing his family—he was married and had six children—with greater economic stability

However, his political activism leads him to publish several essays or pamphlets that cost him days of imprisonment and the pillory. After returning to jail, Defoe begins working from a magazine supporting political factions of the government, participating in the English secret services

In 1719 he publishes his great novel, Robinson Crusoe, which allows him to launch into a literary career marked by successes such as The Adventures of Captain Singleton, A Journal of the Plague Year, or Moll Flanders. His popularity grew and his influence on subsequent generations of writers by enhancing the novelistic genre is notable

Despite all his success and his connections with the government, Defoe never achieved stable economic solvency for long. His death in 1731 occurred while fleeing from new creditors
