Buntaro Mori is a loner, but being alone in a crowd is almost as bad as being forced to fit in. When a dangerous bid for solitude introduces Mori to the rush of solo climbing, he becomes addicted to the brilliant sense of freedom he finds as he pits his body and soul against the heights. But how high does he have to climb to leave humanity behind?

Mori and the 14 Peaks attack team are more than a week into their complete traverse of the Japanese Alps, but bad weather and worse personalities are making the training seem harder than ascending K2 itself. After Mori is singled out for praise by the expedition leader, he finds himself pushed to the edges of the group when the team is beset by a series of increasingly terrible misfortunes. As conditions worsen, can the team pull together, or are they all on their own against the cold mercy of the mountains?

Shinichi Sakamoto nació el 19 de julio de 1972 en la prefectura de Osaka, Japón. Desde muy joven sintió una profunda atracción por el manga y, tras participar en un concurso de manga durante sus años de escolaridad, decidió dedicarse profesionalmente al arte secuencial. Su carrera despegó en los años noventa y desde entonces ha desplegado un estilo gráfico distintivo, de trazo refinado y gran intensidad emocional.

A lo largo de su trayectoria, Sakamoto ha transitado por distintos géneros: arrancó con narrativas de acción y aventura más convencionales, pero a lo largo del tiempo evolucionó hacia trabajos más sobrios, con gran carga metafórica y reflexión humana. Entre sus obras más destacadas se encuentran Kokou no Hito (2007‑2012), que explora el aislamiento y la ambición mediante el alpinismo, y Innocent (2013‑2015) junto con su continuación Innocent Rouge, ambientadas en la Francia revolucionaria. En 2021 inició la serie #DRCL Midnight Children, confirmando su interés por lecturas maduras y visualmente exigentes.

Sakamoto se distingue por un uso muy cuidado de la composición de las viñetas, la textura y el plano secuencial —además de su capacidad para retratar la violencia, la muerte, la belleza y la condición humana con una mirada incisiva. Su obra, cada vez más reconocida, ha influido en el manga contemporáneo al combinar rigor histórico, sensibilidad visual y narrativa de profundidad.
