Synopsis "The God Exception"

This 5-star reviewed book questions the standard of evidence used to accept claims about God — and holds up remarkably well under scrutiny. This "Must Read" by Reedsy Discovery asks a simple question: why do we accept a lower standard of evidence for God than we'd accept for any other claim? Author Ima Quinn spent years investigating it, and The God Exception holds religious claims to the same test we use for everything else: does the claim survive a check that could have failed, and didn't? Working chapter by chapter, the book takes on testimony and eyewitness reliability, miracles and the resurrection, near-death experiences, prayer studies and their actual results, the classic philosophical arguments for God, morality without divine command, and the problem of suffering. Dr. Stephen Dudas called it "an inspired, timely, and necessary work of analysis" — one that doesn't mock religious belief, but follows the question wherever it leads, including to the author's own conclusion, and to where his case is weakest. As he put it: "This is a book that needed to happen."
