Toussaint L’Ouverture es una obra dramática que narra la única revolución exitosa de esclavos negros en la historia que tuvo lugar – a finales del siglo XVIII– en Haití, y que puso fin a la esclavitud logrando la independencia de la primera república negra en el mundo. Una historia protagonizada, precisamente, por Toussaint L’Ouverture, un esclavo libre que puso en jaque los principios ‘universales’ de la ilustración y de la Revolución francesa al exigir igualdad, fraternidad y libertad para todos, incluyendo negros. Toussaint L’Ouverture de C.L.R. James se estrenó en el teatro Westminster de Londres en 1936, y fue la primera obra de teatro escrita, dirigida y actuada por negros en Inglaterra.
