Im alten Griechenland wurde der philosophische Diskurs zwischen Sein und Werden zugunsten des Seins entschieden. Daraus resultiert der eigene Name für die Wissenschaft des Seins-Ontologie. Die Wissenschaft des Werdens fristete bis ins 19. Jahrhundert ein namenloses Schattendasein, bis Jean-Baptiste de Lamarck und Charles Darwin den Begriff der Evolution prägten. Evolution lässt sich eindeutig als Wissenschaft des Werdens begreifen. Damit darf Evolution nicht auf biologische Evolution beschränkt sein, sondern muss auch als kulturelle und physikalische Evolution verstanden werden können. Das erfordert ein allgemeines Evolutionsprinzip, das alle Bereiche abdeckt und erklären kann. Dazu wird ein interdisziplinäres Denken benötigt, wie es der Wahlspruch von T.S. Huxley, einem Weggefährten Darwins einfordert: Try to learn something about everything and everything about something.
