Synopsis "Bakterielle Mutationen (in German)"

Mutationen sind Rechtschreibfehler oder Veränderungen im genetischen Code. Sie sind ziemlich selten, auf 1-10 Millionen DNA-Basen kommt nur etwa eine Mutation, aber Mikroben vermehren sich sehr schnell. Manche Bakterien können sich zum Beispiel alle neun Minuten teilen. Und der gesamte DNA-Strang oder das Genom (gee-nome) von Mikroben ist relativ klein. Ein durchschnittliches Bakterium hat zum Beispiel nur etwa fünf Millionen DNA-Basen. In jeder neuen Generation von Bakterien können also ein oder zwei Fehler im genetischen Code auftreten. Mit anderen Worten: Diese zufälligen Mutationen treten bei Mikroben oft genug auf, um eine wichtige Rolle für ihre Überlebens- und Anpassungsfähigkeit zu spielen.
