Synopsis "Biofilters for soil salinity"

Salinity pollution of aquatic and terrestrial environments is now a major environmental issue. It affects biodiversity, degrades soil and water quality, and severely impairs human activities, particularly agriculture. With this in mind, our study aims to evaluate the combined effectiveness of Spirogyra sp. and gypsum in reducing salinity in water and soil.A gradual increase in alkalinity is observed as salinity rises, particularly between the 21st and 30th days. Gypsum induces a greater increase in pH (up to 8.53), while Spirogyra shows a tendency toward neutralization at the end of the culture period. Chickpeas regulate pH more effectively, even at 9 g/L, returning it toward neutrality (≈7). This adaptive capacity may be linked to specific physiological mechanisms such as the secretion of buffering compounds or the selective absorption of ions.
