In this volume, the second in the Modulus series, Earth is governed by Corporations. Automation has made unemployment normal. The work ethic has been replaced by interactive virtual reality. Yet within ten years the population will exceed the ability of the infrastructure to feed everyone, and it will all come tumbling down... unless a productive solution can be achieved. In Volume 1 (Modulus) Paul Harden attempted a solution and failed badly. In the process, he destroyed an entire planet, killing almost all of its settlers. Now Harden is on the run, an escapee. He has a hole card he believes in, a way back to what he believes is his destiny. But when he reaches for that last card, he attracts the interest of an ancient threat: a hungry, ancient threat. Steve Holbrook, Pat, Tibs, Bobby Morrison, Martin Avery and many other characters from Modulus, Volume 1, go to extraordinary lengths to counter the threat, to do what can be done to resolve the worst of Earth's perils, and to bring Paul Harden at last to justice. In so doing we see the Earth as it may appear in a thousand years, when the seas have risen, humanity has sent aloft great orbital cities, and antimatter is a fuel. Reading volume 1 isn't necessary, though doing so may enhance contextual quality. This volume has been written to contain the background that the story needs.
