William L. Ury es antropólogo, académico, autor y especialista estadounidense en negociación y mediación. Se licenció en Yale y obtuvo un doctorado en Antropología Social por Harvard. En 1979 cofundó el Harvard Negotiation Project y posteriormente participó en la creación del Program on Negotiation de Harvard. Su experiencia trasciende el ámbito académico: ha asesorado a gobiernos, empresas y organizaciones internacionales, y ha intervenido como negociador y mediador en conflictos laborales, políticos y armados. Durante la Guerra Fría colaboró con iniciativas destinadas a reducir el riesgo de una confrontación nuclear entre Estados Unidos y la Unión Soviética.

Ury es coautor de Obtenga el sí. El arte de negociar sin ceder, junto con Roger Fisher; Bruce Patton figura como coautor en las ediciones posteriores. Entre sus libros propios destacan Supere el no, El poder de un no positivo, Obtenga el sí consigo mismo y Possible. Ha recibido, entre otros reconocimientos, el Whitney North Seymour Award de la American Arbitration Association y la Distinguished Service Medal del Parlamento ruso.
