The historical context and the contemporary perception of the Arch are analyzed through a vast range of documentary and iconographic works. Il a ete percu comme modele architectural ideal ou comme triste ruine et son aspect antique fut l'objet de multiples reconstitutions. La presente etude ouvre une nouvelle voie en retracant la fortune d'un monument antique depuis sa creation jusqu'a nos jours, ce que l'on appelle le Nachleben . Ainsi sont presentes pour chaque periode le contexte historique et la perception contemporaine, la fonction et l'aspect changeants du monument en s'appuyant sur un vaste corpus documentaire et iconographique. Des dessins de Giuliano da Sangallo de 1496 jusqu'a Google Earth, en passant par des croquis et des tableaux d'Hubert Robert, de Clerisseau ou de Percier, l'arc d'Orange appartient tout autant a l'imaginaire artistique qu'a l'histoire du patrimoine. A l'issue de cette captivante enquete, c'est aussi une nouvelle datation de sa construction qui est proposee.
