In this novel, Conrad draws on his background as Polish emigré, as well as his first-hand experience as a seaman, to experiment radically with the presentation of human frailty and doubt in the modern world.

Joseph Conrad (1857-1924) was a Polish-British writer known for his tales about the sea, colonialism, and the psychological struggles of individuals facing adversity. His work is characterized by the exploration of themes such as morality, despair, and the absurdity of human existence. Born in Ukraine, Conrad spent much of his life as a sailor before turning to writing, which significantly influenced his narrative style.
