Emma Sullivan has become indispensable to a family that can afford almost anything. Her boyfriend, Daniel Keller, remembers conversations word for word. Since his father’s death, he has come to rely on Emma’s ability to make him laugh and her willingness to stay when he has nothing to say. Graduation will give him control of a tech fortune, and his family already treats her as though she belongs in the future he is about to inherit. His older brother is less accommodating. Michael Keller can sense other people’s intentions, an advantage he has always trusted in business and at home. Emma gives him nothing to read. He begins looking into her past before admitting how much he wants her attention, or how much he resents Daniel for already having it. The photograph he finds places Emma in another city during a month she told Daniel she spent at home, beside a man her boyfriend has never heard of. Daniel remembers her exact account. When the brothers begin comparing what they know, Michael’s suspicions become questions Emma can no longer dismiss as jealousy. She has an explanation, a future to protect, and enough of Michael’s attention to make answering him privately a tempting proposition. But every conversation brings him closer to a part of her life she has kept carefully separate from Daniel. Before Michael uncovers her past, Emma intends to discover what it would take to make him betray his brother.
