Everything Is Fine, I'm in Miami is a memoir-inspired work of fiction about a girl growing up between worlds - wealth and neglect, freedom and control, family and chosen community. Set largely in Northern California from the late 1970s through the early 1990s, the story follows a childhood shaped by musicians, privilege, boarding schools, sailboats, family upheaval, and an unusual degree of independence.Through a sharp, observant voice, the narrator looks back on the people and experiences that taught her how to navigate a world in which adults were often distracted, complicated, or absent. From the Berkeley-Oakland Hills and San Francisco to Lake Tahoe, Carmel, and the restrictive environment of boarding school, she learns to survive through observation, resourcefulness, humor, and the communities she builds around herself. The story culminates in 1991, when a sudden expulsion leads her and a close friend to leave for an international program, eventually separating at Miami International Airport. What begins as an escape becomes a turning point in the narrator's understanding of identity, choice, and belonging. Book One closes with the promise of a larger journey, continuing in Book Two: Antigua & Barbuda.
