Synopsis "Octopus"

Why is octopus blood blue? What is an octopus doing when it walks on two arms? Octopuses kept in aquariums are well known for climbing out of their tanks, and Octopus: Escape Artist of the Sea answers questions like these in five short chapters for readers aged 10 to 12. Octopus blood turns blue when it is carrying oxygen, because it carries the oxygen on a protein built around copper. Two kinds of tropical octopus can walk backwards on two arms while the other six keep up a disguise, one as a rolling coconut and the other as a clump of seaweed. The common octopus has about 500 million neurons, and roughly two-thirds of them are in its arms rather than its brain. The chapters have Wow! boxes and simple diagrams, and the series guides Mila and Omar add questions and asides. At the back are a quiz, a glossary and a How We Know page that shows young readers where the facts come from. Every fact was checked against published sources. The Paper Wild tells one animal at six reading levels, called Folds. This is Fold 4, Explorer.
