Synopsis "Strange Hells"

Strange Hells is a three-act war drama (its title drawn from the Ivor Gurney line quoted at the top) that frames the horrors of the First World War through a Remembrance Day frame story. In 1925, aging veterans Major David Smith and Colonel Urquhart-Stewart sit in a gentlemen's club before a cenotaph ceremony. Smith, haunted by the war, drifts into a long memory/dream of 1917 — the bulk of the play is this flashback, bookended by brief returns to the club (Scene Seven) as the frame closes. Themes: class conflict and the British officer/enlisted divide, the psychological wounds of war (shell shock, guilt, haunting), faith versus skepticism, and the tension between duty/sacrifice and the human cost of "glory."
