Synopsis "The Bear In The Plain Brown Wrapper"

In 1975 Buckhorn County, Alabama, compliance officer Max Griddle weighs commercial trucks at Scale House No. 9 along US Highway 82. His quiet routine derails when he starts feeding morning biscuits to a wild black bear at the station's dumpster. When a passing pulpwood trucker spots the animal and warns the CB radio airwaves that there is a "bear at the scale house," drivers mistakenly assume the warning refers to a state trooper in a smokey bear hat. The factual transmission accidentally coins the defining law enforcement slang term of the decade. As Max hopelessly attempts to correct the record, his accidental fame coincides with two other highway crises. He uncovers that the elusive, legendary outlaw trucker "Copperhead" is actually a highly organized cooperative of forty-one different drivers sharing a single handle to distract the law. Simultaneously, a routine certification reveals that the state accidentally built Scale House No. 9 forty feet off the legal right-of-way to avoid paving over four historical graves, putting fourteen years of weight citations in legal jeopardy.
