Synopsis "Belacqua (in Spanish)"

Belacqua es el primer libro de ficción publicado por Samuel Beckett. Su protagonista, Belacqua Shuah, toma su nombre del muerto más perezoso de La divina comedia, y su apellido, del abuelo de Onán en el Viejo Testamento. Como expresa Matías Battistón en el prólogo: “Es un maestro de la abulia y la pedantería, un adicto al ombliguismo, alguien convencido de que el futuro es suyo por pura prepotencia de descanso. Y Belacqua es también, en gran parte, una caricatura del propio autor, en un momento donde no tenía la menor idea de qué iba a hacer de su vida”.

Belacqua (More Pricks Than Kicks en inglés) fue publicado por primera vez en 1934. En los cuentos aparecen fragmentos de su novela Dream of Fair to Middling Women, que no fue aceptada para ser publicada cuando la escribió. Belacqua es su segundo intento de darle vida a ese personaje menor del Purgatorio de Dante, que tendrá un papel central también en Los huesos de Eco, rechazado por Charles Prentice y publicado por Faber & Faber y Grove Press recién en 2014, y en 2025 por Ediciones Godot.

Samuel Beckett was an Irish playwright, novelist, and poet, born on April 13, 1906 in Dublin and died on December 22, 1989 in Paris. He is widely recognized as one of the most influential figures in the theater of the absurd. He studied at Trinity College in Dublin, where he specialized in Romance languages. After a period as a reader at the École Normale Supérieure in Paris, he settled permanently in France, a country that deeply marked his life and work.

Beckett wrote in both English and French, and his style is characterized by minimalism, black humor, and the exploration of themes such as despair, time, and the human condition. His most famous work, Waiting for Godot (1953), marked a milestone in contemporary theater by subverting traditional dramatic conventions. Other notable works include Endgame, Happy Days, and the novel trilogy consisting of Molloy, Malone Dies, and The Unnamable.

During World War II, he participated in the French Resistance. In 1969, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. Beckett left a legacy that continues to challenge and inspire generations of readers and viewers.
