His work, primarily in the genres of short stories, essays, and poetry, redefined literature in the Spanish language. Throughout his life, he cultivated unparalleled erudition, with constant references to philosophy, metafiction, labyrinths, and the infinite.

Among his most recognized works are Fictions (1944), The Aleph (1949), The Maker (1960), and The Book of Sand (1975).
