Synopsis "La Edad de Hierro (in Spanish)"

Novela narrada en forma de carta que escribe la señora Curren, una profesora de latín que está muriendo de cáncer, a su hija, quien se ha trasladado a vivir a América, huyendo del régimen sudafricano que tanto desprecia. La señora Curren confía dicha carta a Vercueil, un vagabundo alcohólico que vive al lado de su casa, entre un montón de cartones y con un perro. Entre ellos se ha establecido una relación muy especial, en la que la desesperanza y el sufrimiento conforman sus lazos de unión, el cuidado que se dedican será la salvación de ambos. La carta que escribe la señora Curren a su hija explica muy bien cuál es la situación que se vive en su país bajo el régimen del apartheid, consciente y asustada ante una época terrible; una edad de hierro en la que la violencia y la lucha se justifican de un modo irracional.

John Maxwell Coetzee (Cape Town, 1940) is a South African writer naturalized Australian, known for his austere style and focus on themes such as power, identity, and ethics. He studied literature at the universities of Cape Town and Texas, and has been a professor at the University of Cape Town. In 2003, he received the Nobel Prize in Literature for his contribution to universal letters.

Among his most notable works are Life & Times of Michael K (1983), awarded the Booker Prize that same year, and Disgrace (1999), which also received the Booker Prize, making him the first author to win it twice. Other notable novels include Waiting for the Barbarians (1980), Foe (1986), and Elizabeth Costello (2003). His literary output includes novels, essays, and autobiographies.
