Synopsis "the casual vacancy"

A big novel about a small town... When Barry Fairbrother dies in his early forties, the town of Pagford is left in shock.Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty façade is a town at war.Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils...Pagford is not what it first seems. And the empty seat left by Barry on the parish council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen. Who will triumph in an election fraught with passion, duplicity, and unexpected revelations?A big novel about a small town, The Casual Vacancy is J.K. Rowling's first novel for adults. It is the work of a storyteller like no other.

Joanne Rowling (Yate, 1965), known worldwide as J.K. Rowling, is a British writer and screenwriter who has left a deep mark on contemporary literature thanks to the creation of the Harry Potter saga. Her work not only revolutionized children's and young adult literature, but also became a global cultural phenomenon. Before achieving success, Rowling studied Philology and worked in various jobs, including Amnesty International. It was during a train journey when the idea of Harry Potter emerged, which, after overcoming personal difficulties such as the loss of her mother and raising her daughter alone, managed to publish in 1997 after several editorial rejections. The Harry Potter saga, with more than 600 million copies sold and translated into multiple languages, is her most influential work. She also writes crime novels under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith, showing her versatility as an author.

In 2020, J.K. Rowling returned to writing for children with the fairy tale The Ickabog, which she first published for free online during the lockdown; later she donated all the book's royalties to help the most vulnerable groups affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. J.K. Rowling confesses she always wanted to be a writer. She lives in Scotland with her family.
