Interested in dramatic arts, he began his artistic career as an actor while studying and working in radio. He became a playwright after graduating. In 1955, he moved to Mexico to refine his theatrical art. The University of Puerto Rico awarded him a scholarship that allowed him to take courses at Columbia University and New York University in 1959, where he earned a Master of Arts in 1963. Although he started his doctoral studies at Columbia University, he completed them at the Complutense University of Madrid, Spain, in 1976. Sánchez also served as a professor at various universities in the United States, including the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus.
