هذه هي الجوهرة إذن، لكن لماذا رائحة العفن؟ هل لأنَّها كانت في فم الثعبان؟ أم لأنَّ رائحة الثعبان ما زالت عالقة بأنفه؟أحضرَ ماءً وصابونًا، ثمَّ تركها في ماء الصابون، وذهب فنامَ.في اليوم التالي لَم يستطِع أن يقوم لعمله، وكان يتوكَّأ على عصًا ولَم يخبر أحدًا، بل ذهب إلى المستشفى حيث ضُمِّدَت جراحه، ثمَّ عرَّجَ على السوق، واشترى منديلًا كبيرًا مِن الحرير وقارورة مِن العطر، فتعطَّر ثمَّ سكب بعضًا مِن العطر على المنديل ورجع إلى البيت، أخرجَ الجوهرة، وظلَّ يغسلها ويغسلها بالصابون حتَّى خُيِّلَ إليه أنَّه لَم تعُد بها رائحة، ولفَّها في المنديل المعطَّر، وخبَّأها تحت السرير، وقرَّر ألَّا يُخبر أحدًا.
