La revolución española de 1917 fue una de las rupturas políticas más impactantes del Occidente europeo. Inspirada en la revolución rusa de febrero/marzo de ese año y en medio de la Primera Guerra Mundial, la revuelta conjunta de republicanos, sindicalistas, nacionalistas catalanes y militares junteros se convirtió en el suceso más trascendental de la historia de España del siglo xx, porque destruyó el funcionamiento normalizado de la Monarquía constitucional, cortó en seco el nacimiento de la democracia española y abrió las compuertas al largo ciclo autoritario que conoció el país durante el siguiente medio siglo. La revolución española desató las fuerzas que estuvieron tras las dictaduras de Primo de Rivera y Franco, una república inestable y una fratricida Guerra Civil.

Roberto Villa García (Ítrabo, 1978) is a historian and full professor of Political History at Rey Juan Carlos University in Madrid. Specialized in the political history of Spain and contemporary Europe, he has focused his research on parties, elections, and political violence. He has been a visiting researcher at the universities of Wisconsin-Madison and Paris IV-Sorbonne. In 2017, he received the first research award from the Social Council of his university.

Among his most notable works are 1936. Fraud and Violence in the Elections of the Popular Front (2017), co-authored with Manuel Álvarez Tardío; The Price of Exclusion (2010); Alejandro Lerroux. The Liberal Republic (2019); Ricardo Samper. The Tragedy of a Liberal in the Second Republic (2019); 1917. The Catalan State and the Spanish Soviet (2021); and Cánovas del Castillo. Monarchy and Liberalism (2021), in collaboration with Carlos Gregorio Hernández. His work has sparked significant debates in contemporary historiography, especially for his critical analysis of the political and electoral dynamics of the Second Republic.
