(Mexico City, 1950) Began her career as a teacher and film screenwriter, an activity in which she has received various accolades, including the Ariel Award for the best film screenplay. Since the publication of Like Water for Chocolate, her first novel, she gained international recognition and became one of the most important Mexican writers. She received an Honorary Doctorate in Letters from the University of Saint Andrew in Scotland. She has also been awarded the Pablo Neruda Order of Artistic and Cultural Merit by the government of Chile and has been the recipient of the ABBY (American Booksellers Book of the Year) award, a distinction that for the first time in its history was granted to a foreign writer. Her novel Like Water for Chocolate has been translated into 36 languages and adapted into film and theater.

Born in Pinos Altos, Zacatecas, on February 21, 1928. Died in Mexico City on April 18, 2020. Narrator and poet. Studied in San Luis Potosí. She was secretary to Alfonso Reyes from 1956 to 1958. Scholar of the CME, 1966. Xavier Villaurrutia Award 1977 for Petrified Trees. Bellas Artes Medal 2015, for her outstanding contributions to the art and culture of Mexico. Jorge Ibargüengoitia Literature Award 2020, awarded by the University of Guanajuato. Her short story work is considered among the most unique in Mexico during the 20th century, and has been included in various iconic anthologies of the genre, such as The Mexican Short Story of the 20th Century (1964) by Emmanuel Carballo, and Other fires (1986) by Alberto Manguel, among others. Launched for the first time in 1974, the Bellas Artes Short Story Award of San Luis Potosí, in 2018, changed its name to the Amparo Dávila Bellas Artes Short Story Award. In 2020, the University of Guanajuato awarded her the Jorge Ibargüengoitia Literature Award for her distinguished career within the short story genre.

Carlos Fuentes Macías nació el 11 de noviembre de 1928 en la entonces Ciudad de Panamá y falleció el 15 de mayo de 2012 en Ciudad de México. Fue uno de los escritores más destacados de México y una figura central del llamado “boom” de la novela latinoamericana. Plasmó en su obra una extensa reflexión sobre la historia, la identidad mexicana y el diálogo cultural entre América Latina y el resto del mundo.
Su obra abarca la novela, el cuento, el ensayo, el teatro y el guion cinematográfico. Entre sus títulos más relevantes se encuentran La región más transparente (1958), que fue su ópera prima y que lo colocó de inmediato en el foco literario; La muerte de Artemio Cruz (1962), una disección profunda de la Revolución mexicana a través de la memoria y de la técnica narrativa; y Aura (1962), una obra más breve pero igualmente icónica.
Fuentes recibió múltiples reconocimientos a lo largo de su carrera, tanto en México como internacionalmente, incluyendo el Premio Cervantes y el Premio Príncipe de Asturias de las Letras. Su estilo se caracteriza por el uso audaz del lenguaje, la experimentación narrativa y la mezcla de lo histórico con lo mítico, con lo personal y lo colectivo.
En su escritura se percibe un constante compromiso con el devenir social y cultural de México: exploró la modernidad, el mestizaje, la herencia indígena, la urbanización, el poder y la memoria. Su legado literario permanece vivo como uno de los pilares de la narrativa en español del siglo XX.
