Ausrichter der Regatta ist der Royal Ocean Racing Club (RORC) in Cowes auf der Isle of Wight. Seit 1957 wird der prestigetrchtige Vergleich in jedem ungeraden Jahr ausgetragen. Ursprnglich waren nur nationale Mannschaften mit je drei Booten zugelassen, seit 2003 gehen Vereinsmannschaften mit je zwei Booten an den Start. Der Admiral''s Cup wird zuweilen mit dem America''s Cup verwechselt.
