American pianist and composer John Thompson (1889-1963) was born in Pennsylvania. At an early age, he performed as a piano concertist in major cities across America and Europe, where his brilliant performance received much praise. After concluding his concert career, he directed music departments at conservatories in Philadelphia, Indianapolis, and Kansas City. During these tenures, he developed certain defined and original ideas about teaching, and soon became famous for his earnest efforts to engage young students in pianism. His teaching to play with the pinky fingers and his modern course for piano remain some of the best-selling methods in the world today.
