Muy a menudo, antes de averiguarlo, me he preguntado de dónde vendrían la multitud de escenas animadas que poblaban en tropel mis ensueños; porque en la vida real no había visto nunca nada semejante a las imágenes de mis sueños. Esas imágenes torturaron mi infancia, convirtiendo mis noches en procesión de pesadillas; ellas me convencieron, poco después, de que yo era diferente de mis semejantes, criatura innatural y maldita. Sólo durante el día lograba algo de felicidad. Mis noches señalaban el comienzo del reino del terror. ¡Y qué terror! Me atrevo a afirmar que ninguno de los hombres que han hollado la tierra se vio jamás atormentado por un terror semejante y tan intenso como el mío. Porque el mío es el terror de remotísimos tiempos, el terror desenfrenado del mundo primitivo. En resumen, era el terror que imperaba, supremo, en el período que llamamos Pleistoceno Medio.

Jack London (1876-1916), pseudonym of John Griffith Chaney, is one of the great American writers of the early 20th century. His world is inspired by a very subjective interpretation of Nietzsche's philosophy and is built on the principle of survival of the fittest. Born in San Francisco, he was essentially a self-taught child who avidly read the collections of the public library. At seventeen, he embarked on his first schooner, heading to Japan. After several experiences as a sailor and vagabond -which also led to his imprisonment-, London attended Oakland High School and later, the University of California, which he had to leave due to financial problems. Like many, he suffered from gold fever until he finally turned to writing.
